Mike Ivens (Prix De Rome)
Mike Ivens is a working and teaching artist with over 40 years of experience. He is an active member of the Northampton Town and County Art Society, and a former society president.
He works in a range of media including sculptures, oils and pastels.
Mike's large scale sculpture commissions have been thought-provoking and varied, from modelling elaborately ornate giant seashells for the Sultan of Brunei, to creating huge steel sculptures of birds for public green spaces. The latter work was entitled 'Rock drills'.
You may even have noticed his work while pulling up at the main traffic lights next to Abington Park in Northampton, where his large steel sculpture 'Spirit of the Valley' takes pride of place.
Mike started out as an art student in Coventry and then studied at Chelsea College of Art. He won a prestigious place at the British Academy in Rome and studied there for two years, leading to the award of Prix de Rome.
On his return to Britain Mike was awarded a fellowship at the Coventry College of Art and then taught at Aylesford School in Warwick. Mike went on to teach at Guilsborough School in Northamptonshire for many years, where he was the Head of Art.
Today, Mike teaches drawing classes for adults in Rugby, as well as continuing to undertake commissions and regularly exhibiting work.
